The 5 Must-Have Home Decor Pieces

Unpopular opinion, but I think most home decor truly is optional. If you're a more-is-more, can't-get-enough kind of person, then by all means lay the decor on thick! However, as a design professional, I believe that you don't need it to create a successful space. That said, there are five pieces I DO think are important, not only because they help create that cozy home vibe but also because they're functional. Yes, I said functional. Keep reading to get my picks!

A well-placed mirror will turn a "Meh" room into a "OMG!" room in a blink! Always consider placement first because a mirror is only as good as the view it reflects. Be sure the reflection is highlighting something you love about your space, like a gorgeous view out a window or a really cool piece of art. Next, consider shape. If you have a lot of angles in your space, then look to a round or oval mirror to add some organic lines. Rectangular mirrors work well in slim spaces or in a more formal setting.

Maybe this one is a duh, but pillows are a must in my book. Not only do they show some of your style and personality, but they also make those weekend Netflix binges on the sofa cozier. Look for large (20"+) pillows to layer toward the back and closest to the arm of your sofa and smaller or more linear lumbar pillows to put in front and toward the middle. Remember, throw pillows also make great additions to beds, chairs, and window seats, so get creative and have fun! Want to learn more about selecting the right throw pillows? Check out my previous blog post here.

Some might argue that a table lamp is more of a necessity than it is decor, but that's why it made my list. If you've been around for a bit, you know I'm all about function first, and no space is complete without the proper lighting. Overhead lighting can get the job done, but it definitely gives off that doctor's-office vibe that no one really wants to come home to. Table lamps are easy to place around your space on side tables, side boards, kitchen counters, or dressers, and they add the most pleasant glow. Look for options that show off your style, and don't be afraid to mix and match different lamps in the same room!

You. Must. Have. Books. Maybe you aren't much of a reader, or perhaps you're a Kindle kind of person. That's all fine. The thing about books is that they add instant warmth and tell so much about who you are and what you care about. It can be a single coffee table book about saving the rainforest or a set of classic children's books you've had since you were a kid. It doesn't matter what they are as long as they speak to you and the things you cherish most. Fill a whole bookcase or pop one book on an end table. And who knows, maybe if you have a few books around you'll be more likely to pick up the healthy habit of reading before bed instead of scrolling on Instagram. Could happen.

I love me some plants! Whenever I finish designing a space and it still feels like it's lacking, I add a plant. There's something so essential about bringing nature into our daily lives. It completes a home in a way that nothing else does. If you don't have the greenest thumb, that's ok. They make awesome faux plants these days. Would you believe that three of the four plants here are fake? I know, right?! The best part about a faux plant besides never having to water it? You can put them in the darkest of corners and they'll keep on keeping on. It's a thing of beauty.

That does it for my list of five must-have home decor pieces. At the end of the day, these are my picks and you need a space that makes YOU happy, so have fun with your decor! Go minimalist or maximalist, do loads of color, or keep it neutral. Just do you! If you need help figuring out what pieces will finish off your space in style, be sure to drop me a line. I'd love to chat and learn more about you and your home!
